Painting, Allan Bernaldo, 'Sovereign's Escort' by Allan Bernaldo, 1960
... the artist was in London during 1952 showing the queen's guards... was in London during 1952 showing the queen's guards on horseback ...Artist's Statement: I spent time visiting the barracks, museums, libraries, gaining information, making special pencil drawings and colour notes, when and where possible. Preparatory drawings for larger paintings were always on detail paper. The reason for this was I could use both sides, correfting mistakes on either side, until a satisfactory end. I use this procedure so that the surface of the painting paper was not effected by erasion. The final drawing was traced on having rubbed a stick of charcoal on the detail paper. I have used this procedure from my early days as a commercial artist. In drawing each horseman fully and tracing each horseman fuly in his place in relation to the whole and rubbibg out the parts covered by the nearer objects. Such essential things as legs and shadows are sure to be in the right place. Most of the pencil drawings of the palace gates, and other features I needed had to be made from a standing position. all these were filed for future reference. Everything had to be in the right proportion to the palace gates. The procedure for the Escort is as follows: If the Life Guards mount the escort an officer of the Blues rides at the right of the coach by invitation. The Guards officer rides on the left. Then follows the Standard flanked by a commissioned officer on the right. The trumpeter on the left. The trumpeter rides on a white horse. He has a selection of twelve different uniforms. After that follows the unit. The stirrups used by the officers are squarish. The troopers stirrups are a conventional form. All personnel riding and on no account rise in the stirrups as normally they would at the trot. This modifies the ragged impression of heads bobbing up haphazardly - their behinds become acclimatized in time." Gift of the Artist, 1981. Allan BERNALDO (05 August 1898-25 June 1988) Born Creswick, Victoria Allan Bernaldo won a scholarship to the Ballarat School of Mines to study Architecture. He received a certificate of merit in 1917, and the Ballarat School of Mines President's medal for the most meritorious Art student. Allan Bernaldo was editor of the Ballarat School of Mines Magazine in 1918. He became known as a commercial artist, teacher and water-colourist who specialiesd in horses and flowers. He died at St. Ronan’s Nursing Home in Armadale, Victoria and was buried at Springvale Botanical Cemetery, with his wife Florence Victoria May Elliott, who predeceased him in 1966. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. In 1952, the Netherlands joined in the event, creating ...The International Stoke-Mandevile Games, held in Tel-Aviv in 1968, were later classified as the third edition of the Paralympics. The International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports (IWAS) World Games (or IWAS World Games) are a multi-sport competition for athletes with a disability, which under the former name of the International Stoke Mandeville Games were the forerunner of the Paralympic Games. The competition has been formerly known as the World Wheelchair and Amputee Games, the Stoke Mandeville Wheelchair Games, the Stoke Mandeville Games, the World Wheelchair Games, and in the 1960s and 1970s was often referred to as the Wheelchair Olympics. The Games were originally held in 1948 by neurologist Sir Ludwig Guttmann, who organized a sporting competition involving World War II veterans with spinal cord injuries at the Stoke Mandeville Hospital rehabilitation facility in Aylesbury, England, taking place concurrently with the first post-war Summer Olympics in London. In 1952, the Netherlands joined in the event, creating the first international sports competition for the disabled. In 1960, the Ninth Stoke Mandeville Games were held in Rome, Italy, following that year's Olympic Games. These are considered to be the first Paralympic Games.[1] The 2012 Paralympic mascot Mandeville was named after Stoke Mandeville Hospital. While the Paralympic Games evolved to include athletes from all disability groups, the Stoke Mandeville games continued to be organized as a multi-sport event for wheelchair athletes. Games were held annually in Aylesbury under the direction of the International Stoke Mandeville Games Federation (ISMGF), which became the International Stoke Mandeville Wheelchair Sports Federation (ISMWSF)..Plastic medallion encasing a paper disc commemorating the 1968 Stoke-Mandeville Games for the Paralysed. Dress, Stage costume, circa 1950s-70s
Purchased from an opportunity shop, this dress is a stage costume bearing the label of Bonn & Mackenzie, a prominent UK costume designer from the 1950s to the 1970s. The dress appears to have been worn by June Bronhill (1929-2005), a prominent Australian opera singer and actress, whose name is handwritten on the label. Born June Mary Gough, she began using the stage name of Bronhill in 1952 in honour of her NSW home town of Broken Hill as a form of thanks to the local community who had helped raise money to send her overseas for professional training as a singer. Bronhill trained in London and gained early exposure with the English National Opera. She went on to star in many theatrical productions in Australia and the UK. She moved back to Australia permanently in 1976, and in 1980 was cast in her first television role as Mrs Crawford in the Australian version of 'Are You Being Served?'.Full-length short-sleeved dress of white cotton, lace and nylon, featuring elaborately ruffled sleeves and vertical stripes of lace on the skirt and bodice. Headwear - Cream Silk Floral Hat, Erik London [C&G Kobenhaven], 'Cezanne', 1950s
Erik of London was an internationally significant milliner. He was a recognised authority on fashion, frequently quoted in the Australian press of the day. A number of his models are illustrated in Australian newspapers. It was not unusual for him to glamorise his hats with French names. A model 'Carmen' was launched in 1952.The Kew Historical Society’s fashion and design collection is comprised of costumes, hats, shoes and personal accessories. Many of these items were purchased or handmade in Victoria; some locally in Kew. The extensive hat collection comprises items dating from the 1860s to the 1970s. While most of the hats in the collection were created by milliners for women, there are a number of early and important men’s hats in the collection. The headwear collection is particularly significant in that it includes the work of notable Australian and international milliners.Ivory coloured woman’s hat bordered and almost completely covered with abstract floppy flowers of the same colour. Beside the label on the brim is the handwritten word ‘Cezanne’ which is presumably the name of the model.Label: Erik London. Photograph, Kew Light Opera Company, San Toy OR The Emperor's Own, 1953
The Kew Light Opera Company was formed in 1952, and mounted a number of musical and variety productions each year until it was subsumed in the "Q" Theatre Guild in 1957. A partial record of performances by the company includes: 1952 Florodora, 1953 The Cingalee - San Toy or The Emperor's Own, 1954 While the Sun Shines - A Country Girl - Our Miss Gibbs, 1955 The Toreador - The Arcadians, 1956 The Maid of the Mountains - Whiteoaks - Goodnight Vienna!, 1957 A Country Girl. Most of the Company's performances took place in the Kew Recreation Hall in Wellington Street, Kew. The scrapbook of annotated photographs, programmes, and newspaper reviews of which this item is a part was assembled by Marion Tilley, wardrobe mistress for, and performer in, productions by the Kew Light Opera Company and the "Q" Theatre Guild. It is significant as a remarkably complete document of theatre performances in Kew, Victoria during the 1950s and 1960s. The scrapbook, and the items individually catalogued within it, have artistic and aesthetic significance within the history of performing arts in Victoria in the middle of the 20th Century. They have social significance in that they reveal socio-cultural values and preoccupations during the period. The records also act as a history of arts activities in the Kew Recreation Hall and later in the Kew City Hall as entertainment and community arts and music precincts.Black and white photograph of performers in San Toy OR The Emperor's Own. San Toy was a "Chinese" musical comedy in two acts, first performed at Daly's Theatre, London, on 21 October 1899. The book was written by Edward Morton, and the musical score was written by Sidney Jones with lyrics by Harry Greenbank and Adrian Ross. Additional songs were written by Lionel Monckton. The photograph of the cast on stage includes 'Betty', far right. This may have been Betty Eames, Betty Wilson or Betty Crowe. The scenery was by Alexander and Day and the production directed by Lance Nicholls in the Kew Recreation Hall.Arrow and name 'Betty' beside right of photo.performing arts -- kew (vic.), scrapbooks, marion tilley collection, kew light opera company, kew recreation hall, musical comedy -- melbourne -- victoria
